PSI in the Spotlight: December 2008

PSI-SGKB [doi:10.1038/nw_psisgkb.2008.15]

An easy way to nominate protein targets to the PSI centers

The PSI has created a centralized system that allows investigators to submit target suggestions to the 10 PSI structural genomics centers. These proposals are evaluated for feasibility and consistency with the overall PSI goals. Collectively, the four large-scale production centers are currently pursuing structural studies of over 1,400 community-nominated targets. The six PSI specialized centers, which focus on various structure-determination bottlenecks, also consider target nominations.

Submit target proposals from the PSI SGKB homepage.

Through the PSI SGKB homepage (see image), investigators can create an account that can store and submit multiple proposals. Proposals should include full protein sequence information, a brief outline describing why these targets should be studied, and a synopsis of previous work performed on these targets. Preference is given to novel targets with less than 30% identity to any other structure deposited in the PDB. Experimental method recommendations (X-ray or NMR) and specific PSI center suggestions (large-scale production or specialized) are encouraged. Upon submission, the proposal will be considered by a review committee within 30 days, and notifications will be forwarded to the investigator's primary e-mail address.

Detailed target proposal guidelines are available at http://kb.psi-structuralgenomics.org/KB/proposal-guidelines.html. For general inquiries about the Community Nominated Targets program, please contact Dr Ward W. Smith at Email: smithwar@nigms.nih.gov.
